Emmanuelle Roule was born in 1984 in Saint-Étienne. She currently lives and works in Paris.
Graduate of the National School of Applied Arts and Crafts of Paris (Olivier de Serres), Emmanuelle Roule is an artist and designer. In 2007, she founded her studio in Paris, developing a transversal and multidisciplinary approach between graphic design, design and artistic direction.
Since 2012, she has been researching ceramic material, questioning volume and material through modeling with a strong architectural dimension. Each of her pieces is unique: they are not part of a series, but are variations on an experimental process. They are the result of an exploratory and artistic work conducted around the light, texture and colour that relate to each other and to the surrounding space - the geography of form.
Emmanuelle Roule's work seems closer to sculpture than to the usual practice of ceramics. Freeing herself from form by any means necessary... setting it free. Thanks to its plasticity, stoneware allows Emmanuelle to reconstitute spaces. Like imaginary architectures, rather organic, sometimes angular, but always underlined by rich, pictorial glazing.
Two colours in particular dress her pieces: green and blue. The reflections projected onto the colours revive and lustre them, giving the sculpture an organic dimension on the edge of life. With mischief and poetry, the artist often punctuates her constructions with modular, autonomous pieces, sometimes in shiny silver enamel, like a playful invitation to make her world our own.
In addition to her personal practice, in 2017 Emmanuelle co-founded, with three other ceramic artists, a studio and collective called Gangster, based in the Bastille district of Paris.

Passionate about architecture (industrial, pavilion, brutalist...) -from here and elsewhere-, my work uses these micro-architectures to explore the question of space: of one's own space and the space of the other; the notions of circulation and cohabitation.
To apprehend the connections as much in the symbiosis as in the ambivalence, between materials, forms in order to question the very notion of otherness, cultivating the randomness of the revelation of the colours in the invisible of the firings and the furnace.
The otherness is linked to a spatial dimension. This duality, this confrontation is highlighted in the pieces by the play, in particular, of light and chiaroscuro; notably in relation to the "Ma". A Japanese term meaning "interval" in the notions of time, space..., "Ma" is an aesthetic that refers to the subjective variations of emptiness and silence. The way in which, notably in architecture, the shadow draws another form, a counter-form which is like a transition, a complement, a balance, which underlines the whole. There is not an absence, there is a relation.
