"Travelling, collecting, looking, cutting mirrors to create a whole, so that it no longer reflects an image but produces it. Like a staging of matter and materials that time cannot erase. We observe, we reflect on the reflection, on reality. Wild grass invades the room, and the composition becomes abstraction."
Mathilde Labrouche is a multidisciplinary artist who manipulates paint, textiles and also mirrors. The common point of all her works is the use of old materials, to give them a new life, differently.
It is during her travels that Mathilde Labrouche gathers these mirrors from another time, which she cuts out, recomposes, assembles, and then works with inserts of old wallpaper. One can often guess a suggestive motif - a branch, a leaf, a flower - or just the patina, the wear and tear, the passing of time.
While a traditional mirror simply reflects the present, Mathilde Labrouche's mirrors have the power to evoke the past... a form of nostalgia springs up in us.
With this work of great sensitivity, the spectator is invited to have a new experience of the mirror, which is no longer only to be looked at in an intimate way but in a relational way between the body, space, light, and time.
