Clàudia Valsells (1969) was born and lives in Barcelona. She is an artist who specializes in color. A multidisciplinary creator, she discovered painting through mural painting. As a visual artist, she never tires of exploring the possibilities of color and form. For Clàudia, there are endless ways of approaching color, but hers has always been to associate chromatism with its forms, to create her creative language. Based on her reflections as an artist and her experience in trend prediction and mural painting in interior design and architecture, she brings to all her work a distinctive, harmonious, rhythmic and sensitive approach, with color as a primary tool. Her intuition and creativity are fed by thought and analysis. In her most recent work, she strips color of all artifice and fixes it on the canvas in organic forms. Aware of the emotional impact of color and its infinite wealth of nuances, she develops and defines color ranges and color harmonies, abstracting color from matter and any other artifice and seeking in the white of the canvas her only ally. A self-taught painter, in 1992 she went to study mural painting at the Institut Supérieur de Peinture Van Der Kelen et Logelain in Brussels, Belgium. On her return from Brussels, she worked on commissions and for architects, on projects of different scales. Soon she founded her own company, under the name of arts&claus, specializing in painting and color applied to architecture and interior design. For 20 years she worked on projects in Spain and abroad. Her role was to convey the value of color and its texture in the decoration of interior spaces. Working closely with professionals in the fields of art, design, and architecture, she managed and produced the painting of the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house in Barcelona and painting for luxury hotels in Barcelona, Seville, Córdoba, Paris and Berlin, as well as numerous private homes, with the best architects. She also produced and edited two color cards of her own, with more than 200 references, which have been used as color communication tools by Spain’s best architects. Her profession as a muralist has always been linked to that of the colorist and to the artistic painting. Clàudia is currently focusing all her professional activity on her vocation as an artist. Her work adorns hotels and restaurants in Spain and abroad. She has exhibited on several occasions in the Miquel Alzueta gallery in Barcelona, the Palau de Casavells gallery in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, the Sala Vinçon gallery in Barcelona and the Traç art school gallery in Barcelona, among others.
“If I were to tell you about my art, I would say that an untiring quest for the reason of colour and its form has been my obsession throughout my career. For me, a new approach to colour comes into existence every time I construct one of my works. When creating harmonies I strive to convey particularity, rhythm and sensitivity. The ranges of tones shed all artifice when I fix them on the canvases in unique, unrepeatable organic forms, with spontaneous, expressive and irregular strokes.”
Drawing inspiration from, while simultaneously enriching andnourishing, the worlds of architecture, design and interior design, her role for more than 20 years has been to transmit the value of colour and its texture in the decoration of spaces. Valsells has conveyed tones and textures in the painting of the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house in Barcelona, in the decoration of luxury hotels around Europe, in the creation of two unique colour cards with more than 200 colour references, and in one-person exhibitions in various galleries and contemporary art collections. She leads the way as a colourist and is a trendsetter in the creation of colours and tonalities in her country. Having started as a muralist before evolving as a colourist and painter, Valsells breathes life into her works as a natural part of the beauty of the material on the canvas. She combines colours to create rational emotion – thought and feeling in equilibrium – opening new paths in the quest for colour and its form. At present, her work is represented by Barcelona gallery owner Miquel Alzueta, who exhibits her work in Spain and internationally.
