Annabelle Jouot

Annabelle Jouot works with wool using a range of tools she prefers to keep rudimentary: a large wooden flat needle, another metal one, a few shuttles, and a wide comb.

The artist practices the ancient Kilim technique and creates minimalist artworks that speak to us about time and its elasticity. The contractions and stretches reveal the abstraction of time. Compressed time, infinite time.

A woven work is also a work that uses physics. Annabelle Jouot works with the tensions and relaxations of the material: expansions, contractions, resistances...

Each of her works is a technical invention, an exploration of the material, and an ode to imperfection dear to the artist.

Through these woven works, Annabelle Jouot creates true cosmogonies and gradually unveils a map of her personal mythology. The slowness of the work process allows for constant reflection, like a thought going back and forth. We can see the path taken and the path traveled, time is visible, time is legible.

The titles of Annabelle Jouot's works invoke this quest for the spirit and space.

It all starts with the warp on which the work is created. This warp, like the skeleton of the work, does not disappear and remains visible. The word "trame" comes from the Latin "trama," a contraction of "trans" (beyond) and "meare" ("to flow, to slip"). Literally, "trame" means "to slide beyond," and that is precisely what is at the heart of Annabelle Jouot's minimalist and raw artworks.
