Emily Payne is interested in creating work that explores the interplay between light and shadow, heft and levity, and the way objects and drawings are energized and animated by the space around them. Working with a variety of materials including wire, used book parts, found metal scraps, graphite and gouache, the two and three-dimensional pieces she makes are inspired by natural forms and the detritus around her. Searching for artifacts that reveal the pulse of a place, a piece of bent wire from a construction site or a fallen pine branch become starting points in which the currency of a place takes physical form.
She is committed to observing and digesting the natural, human, and unseen but felt rhythms around her. Creating a non-verbal language of her own, that some people seem to understand, is deeply satisfying. It remains a mystery to her how meaning is conveyed in such an exchange, and this is why he continues to follow her curiosity, and to connect and communicate through art.
Her work can be seen at Amelie Maison D’art in New York, the Seager Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, and Kala Art Institute in Berkeley. Some of her site-specific, permanent public art pieces can be seen at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center; Stanford Medical Center in Emeryville; The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation in Palo Alto; The Public Libraries in Hayward and Lafayette; Square HQ in San Francisco; and Guild Row in Chicago, IL. Payne received her M.F.A. in Book Arts and Printmaking from San Francisco State University. She lives and works in Berkeley, California.
