Danielle Mckinney: "Quiet Storm – A Journey Through Rest and Solitude"

Danielle Mckinney's latest exhibitionQuiet Storm, presents an evocative journey into the intimate world of Black women in repose. Currently on display at New York, the showcase features 12 oil paintings that beautifully capture luxurious moments of reflection, rest, and solitude.

The title Quiet Storm draws inspiration from the artist's personal journeys and from a cherished radio format she listened to in her youth. Mckinney's work focuses on Black women in peaceful interior spaces, offering viewers a glimpse into the nuanced experiences of her subjects. Through her meticulous use of rich colors and bold compositions, Mckinney invites viewers to pause and absorb the tranquil beauty of her subjects' moments of musings.

Each painting in the exhibition presents a different scene, from the elegant repose in "Hold Your Breath" to the petulance in "Evening Star." Mckinney's paintings reveal her attention to detail (these red nails and cigarette smoke!), capturing the complexities of her subjects' moods and expressions. Her choice of deep, dark backgrounds and soft brushstrokes adds to the intimate, almost dreamlike atmosphere of her work.

The artist's original love for photography merges seamlessly with her now painting practice, drawing from various sources of inspiration to construct her imagined subjects.

Mckinney's works resonate with audiences, particularly Black women, who see themselves reflected in her art and feel a sense of empowerment through the celebration of rest and self-care in a lavish tone.

As viewers wander through the gallery's three rooms, they experience Mckinney's art as an invitation to slow down and embrace the quiet moments of life. The exhibition creates a soothing ambiance with moody violet walls, allowing each painting to stand out and evoke a sense of calm.

Danielle Mckinney: Quiet Storm is on view until April 27 at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York
